During my time in Thailand, I spent 10 nights and 11 days at JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa, one of the more affordable JW Marriott properties I have encountered worldwide. Despite its relatively accessible rates, the resort offers impressive facilities, an enormous swimming pool, and a level of comfort that makes an extended stay surprisingly appealing.
As a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite member, I was upgraded to a Duplex Suite, which made the experience even more enjoyable. However, there is one important consideration before booking: the resort is exceptionally secluded.
While this may be precisely what some travelers are looking for, those hoping to explore Phuket or enjoy a lively neighborhood may find the location less convenient than expected. After spending 10 nights here, I came away with a clear understanding of both its appeal and its limitations.

First Impressions – An Impressive Resort at a Surprisingly Reasonable Price
What initially attracted me to JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa was its value. Compared with many other JW Marriott resorts around the world, room rates here can be remarkably reasonable, particularly during Thailand’s rainy season. Yet the property itself feels anything but modest.
The extensive grounds, spacious accommodations, and exceptionally large swimming pool create an atmosphere that feels considerably more luxurious than the price might suggest. The main drawback is its isolated location.
There is very little immediately surrounding the resort, and even the nearby town is relatively small and quiet rather than a bustling destination filled with restaurants, shops, and entertainment.
Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite members and above were entitled to complimentary shuttle transportation into town during my stay, while other guests had to pay for a round trip. The paid shuttle was not particularly inexpensive, either.
That said, I never felt a strong reason to visit the town. For a more affordable local dinner, there were one or two very small restaurants along the left side of the beach. These provided a convenient alternative to dining exclusively within the resort.
Otherwise, this is very much a destination designed for guests who prefer to spend most of their time on the property itself.

Duplex Suite – A Thoughtfully Designed Two-Level Retreat
Having stayed in numerous hotels around the world, I have occasionally been assigned duplex-style suites. These rooms can be beautiful, particularly when high ceilings create a wonderful sense of openness. However, their practicality often depends on one seemingly minor detail: the placement of the bathrooms.
Some duplex suites require guests to move between floors whenever they need to use the bathroom, which becomes especially inconvenient during the night. Fortunately, my Duplex Suite at JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa was among the best-designed examples I have experienced.
The lower level featured a separate living area with its own bathroom, while the upstairs bedroom also had a bathroom. This made an enormous difference to everyday comfort.
There was no need to navigate the staircase in the middle of the night, and the separation between the living and sleeping spaces gave the suite a more residential feel. For a stay lasting 10 nights, these practical details mattered far more than decorative luxury alone.
The housekeeping team also added a thoughtful personal touch. Each day, I returned to find a different towel arrangement, and I genuinely began looking forward to discovering what they had created.
On one occasion, the team even delivered a DIY cocktail-making set to our room. These were small gestures, but over an extended stay, they made the experience feel more personal and enjoyable.

Elite Benefits and Special Events
During my visit, the resort also hosted a cocktail gathering approximately once a week, with Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite members and above invited to attend. It was a pleasant opportunity to enjoy a drink and experience a little additional recognition as an elite guest.
However, travelers accustomed to executive lounges and evening refreshments at city hotels should be aware that there was no separate daily happy hour benefit at this resort. The occasional cocktail reception was a welcome addition, but it was not a substitute for a traditional executive lounge experience.

Swimming Pool – The Extraordinary Highlight of the Resort
If there is one feature that truly distinguishes this property, it is the swimming pool. The resort is known for its extraordinary lagoon-style pool system, extending approximately 2.5 kilometers and described as one of the longest swimming pools in Southeast Asia.
It is difficult to appreciate the scale until you see it in person. Rather than a conventional pool occupying a central courtyard, the water winds through the property like an intricate network of canals.
At times, the scenery reminded me more of Venice than a typical beachfront resort in Thailand. There were even small coconut boats moving across the water, adding a rather unexpected charm to the atmosphere.
One particularly appealing feature is the abundance of ground-floor pool-access rooms. Guests can step directly from their accommodations into the water, making these rooms especially attractive for families who enjoy spending much of the day swimming.
The overall scale of the property is equally impressive. The main resort is connected to an adjoining suites resort, creating what feels like two substantial resorts within one expansive complex.
Walking a complete circuit around the grounds took me approximately 40 minutes. It was almost like taking a proper daily walk without ever leaving the resort.
In fact, throughout my entire 10-night stay, I did not venture outside the resort even once. That may sound unusual, particularly for someone who travels as frequently as I do, but the property was spacious enough that I never felt confined.
Two Connected Resorts, Two Different Atmospheres
Another interesting aspect was the distinction between the two connected resort areas. One side appeared to attract more families, while the other had a noticeably stronger presence of couples.
Although they formed part of the same broader resort environment, each area seemed to have its own character. Families could enjoy the lively atmosphere around the pool-access accommodations, while couples could find areas that felt somewhat more relaxed.
For anyone considering an extended resort holiday, this sense of space and variety is a considerable advantage.

Private Beach – Beautiful Potential, but Weather Matters
Just beyond the swimming pool is the resort’s beachfront area, offering direct access to a long stretch of sand. Unfortunately, my stay took place during the rainy season, so the sea was not particularly vibrant in color.
The water lacked the clear turquoise tones often associated with Thailand’s Andaman coast. I could easily imagine how beautiful the setting might be under the bright sunshine of the dry season, but that was not the experience I had.
This brings me to one of the most important considerations when booking a holiday in Khao Lak: the season can dramatically influence the experience.
During the rainy season, room rates can fall to approximately half of what guests might pay during the dry season. For someone who travels frequently and pays close attention to accommodation costs, that difference is certainly attractive.
However, having experienced the weather myself, I would be hesitant to recommend Phuket or Khao Lak during the rainy season to travelers whose priority is sunshine and beautiful beaches.
In some tropical destinations, such as parts of the Philippines, rainy-season weather can still include long periods of sunshine interrupted by occasional showers. My experience in this part of Thailand was quite different.
Throughout my 10 days in Khao Lak, the weather remained persistently cloudy and rainy. Including my time in Phuket, I experienced almost an entire month of similarly unsettled conditions.
Of course, weather patterns vary from year to year, and other travelers may have better luck. Nevertheless, my experience gave me a much clearer appreciation of why accommodation rates rise so considerably during the dry season.
The savings were substantial, but so was the difference in the overall atmosphere. For travelers dreaming of bright skies, blue water, and long afternoons on the beach, paying more for the right season may ultimately be worthwhile.

Breakfast – Generous, Varied, and Especially Good for Mango Lovers
Breakfast was another aspect of the stay that I genuinely enjoyed. The buffet offered an extensive selection of Thai dishes, Indian specialties, and familiar Western breakfast options.
Whether you prefer traditional local flavors or a more conventional international breakfast, there was plenty of variety. My personal highlight, however, was the fresh mango.
Generous quantities were available every morning, and I took full advantage of them. There is something particularly satisfying about adding fresh, ripe mango to a bowl of yogurt and enjoying it slowly over breakfast.
It became one of my favorite little routines during the stay. The selection was plentiful enough that a substantial breakfast could easily keep me satisfied until lunchtime.
During my visit, only one breakfast restaurant was operating. Given the size of the property, I suspected that a second venue might open during the busier high season, although I did not personally confirm this.
The restaurant offered both indoor seating and an outdoor terrace, both of which were available to all guests, including families with children.
I particularly appreciated the terrace. It provided a pleasant, open-air setting where breakfast could be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. The indoor dining area was equally comfortable, offering a welcoming space for guests of all ages.
For travelers who value a peaceful morning as much as the food itself, having a choice of dining environments was a welcome feature.

Location and Transportation – The Biggest Practical Disadvantage
While the resort itself offers excellent value, transportation is another matter entirely. Khao Lak is considerably more remote than Phuket’s main tourist areas and is also farther from Phuket International Airport.
This relative isolation contributes to the lower hotel prices, but it can make exploring the surrounding region both time-consuming and expensive.
For example, traveling from the resort to Phuket involved a journey of approximately 120 kilometers, with taxi fares generally quoted between 2,600 and 3,000 THB. That is a considerable amount to spend on a single transfer.
I wondered whether booking through a nearby travel agency might offer a more competitive fare, so I compared several options. Surprisingly, the quotations were almost identical.
It reminded me of similar experiences in Koh Samui, where taxi prices often seem remarkably consistent regardless of whom you ask.
I could not establish whether there was any formal agreement between drivers, but the lack of meaningful price variation certainly made shopping around feel rather pointless.
Still, sometimes transportation is simply an unavoidable part of traveling, and the journey has to be made. This is something I would strongly encourage visitors to consider when comparing hotel prices.
A cheaper room rate does not necessarily translate into a cheaper holiday if substantial transportation expenses are added to the total.

Who Should Consider Staying in Khao Lak?
Khao Lak makes considerably more sense for travelers planning to explore destinations on this side of the Andaman coast. If visiting the Similan Islands or Khao Lak’s national park attractions is part of your itinerary, the location can be a genuine advantage.
It is also well suited to families and couples who want to enjoy a peaceful resort holiday without feeling the need to venture out every day.
However, I would be less inclined to recommend it for a short trip focused primarily on Phuket. There are relatively few attractions within the immediate surroundings, and frequent journeys back and forth to Phuket can quickly consume both time and money.
For a brief holiday, those practical disadvantages may outweigh the savings on accommodation.
Final Thoughts – Would I Stay Again?
After spending 10 nights at JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa, I can understand why this property appeals to travelers seeking a luxurious resort experience without paying the exceptionally high rates often associated with the JW Marriott brand.
The facilities are impressive, the pool system is genuinely extraordinary, and the spacious grounds make an extended stay feel surprisingly comfortable.
My Duplex Suite was thoughtfully designed, the housekeeping team added lovely personal touches, and breakfast was consistently enjoyable. At the same time, this is not a resort I would recommend unconditionally.
Its secluded location, expensive transportation, and limited surrounding attractions are important considerations, particularly for first-time visitors to the Phuket region.
The weather also played a significant role in shaping my experience. Although rainy-season rates can be remarkably attractive, I personally found the prolonged cloudy and rainy conditions less enjoyable than I had hoped.
For travelers whose main priority is a beautiful beach holiday, I would favor visiting during the dry season, even if it means paying more.
Would I return? Yes, under the right circumstances. If I were planning another long, leisurely resort stay, particularly at a competitive room rate, I would certainly consider coming back.
However, for a shorter trip focused on sightseeing, restaurants, and exploring Phuket, I would choose a more conveniently located property.
Ultimately, the value of this resort depends less on its star rating and more on the kind of holiday you want.
For those who enjoy spacious accommodations, extensive swimming facilities, and the freedom to spend days entirely within a resort, it can be an excellent choice.
For travelers who prefer to explore a different neighborhood every day, the location may feel unnecessarily restrictive.
And after 10 nights here, that is perhaps my clearest conclusion: this is a resort worth choosing for the resort itself, rather than for what lies beyond it.
