These stays have allowed me to compare not only rooms and facilities, but also the practical details that become especially important when traveling in Japan.
How I Compare Hotels in Japan
When reviewing hotels in Japan, I pay particular attention to room size and layout, room condition, breakfast quality, elite-member benefits, Wi-Fi reliability, transportation, airport access, nearby restaurants and convenience stores, and overall value for the rate paid.
Room size is especially important in Japan, where even well-located hotels can feel significantly different depending on how efficiently the space is designed. I also consider whether a hotel provides enough room for luggage, a practical desk or work area, and convenient access to trains, airport buses, or hotel shuttles.
Depending on the property, I also look at public baths, executive lounges, laundry facilities, shuttle services, late-night food options, and access to supermarkets or convenience stores. These details can make a substantial difference during a longer stay.
Rather than judging a hotel only by its brand or star rating, I consider how comfortable and practical it feels during an actual stay, and whether the experience justifies the price compared with other hotels in the same destination.
