Viceroy Bali Review: Luxury Private Pool Villa in Ubud, Bali

Hello, I’m SINAE, a travel writer who spends much of the year traveling the world, writing, and photographing the places I stay.

Today, I’m sharing my review of Viceroy Bali Ubud, a luxury pool villa resort located in Ubud, one of Bali’s most atmospheric and deeply restorative destinations.

Opened in 2005, the property is part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and the SLH Finest Collection. It can also currently be booked through Hilton as an SLH hotel. In simple terms, it is not a large-scale chain hotel in the conventional sense, but rather an independent luxury hotel connected through Hilton’s SLH partnership, which means guests may be able to enjoy certain benefits and even redeem points through that channel.

One of the defining features of the resort is that every accommodation is designed as a private pool villa. With only around 40 villas in total, the room count is very small, yet the overall grounds feel remarkably spacious. This means that the amount of space allocated to each villa – and to each guest – feels exceptionally generous.

It is truly the kind of luxury hotel where the architecture is designed to blend into the surrounding natural landscape. Rather than simply staying in a beautiful room, you feel as though you are resting within nature itself.

Deluxe Terrace Villa at Viceroy Bali Ubud

Check-in was from 2:00 PM, but I arrived slightly early and took some time to walk around the pool and gardens before entering the villa. The lobby is designed in an open-air style, and I also noticed plaques and awards recognizing the property as a World Luxury Hotel. I had heard the name once or twice before, but this was my first time actually staying here, so I walked in with a genuine sense of anticipation.

The villa interior had a classic, warm atmosphere, with the bedroom and living area arranged together in one comfortable space. The bathroom was designed in an open layout, with a large bathtub placed at the center – perfect for a slow, relaxing soak. The toilet and shower were separated, and the double vanity made the space feel even more practical and refined.

It was the kind of villa that could genuinely be described as full luxury. Welcome fruit and flowers had already been prepared, and the ice bucket was filled with ice when I arrived. There was also a coffee machine, which made it easy to enjoy a relaxed moment with an iced Americano inside the villa.

A Private Pool with a Forested Cliff View

What makes this villa especially memorable is its location along a deep forested valley and cliffside. The level of privacy feels excellent. When you look out from inside the villa, it almost feels as if you are somewhere in the middle of the jungle.

Sunny days are beautiful, of course, but rainy days also reveal a very special side of Ubud. Swimming while listening to the sound of rain falling on the leaves was one of those experiences I do not think I will ever forget.

From the pool, the view is filled with dense greenery, but beneath it there is also a river, so you can hear the sound of flowing water. It was honestly difficult to capture the full atmosphere in photos.

If you are visiting Bali for a honeymoon, an ocean-view resort is lovely – but I would also highly recommend experiencing the charm of staying deep in the forest. The days passed so quickly that I almost wanted to hold onto our two-night, three-day stay and make time stand still.

Another detail I appreciated was that the room was serviced twice a day, which helped keep the villa feeling beautifully fresh and comfortable throughout the stay.

A Fairytale-Like Infinity Pool

Although it would be easy to spend the entire day inside the villa, time at the main pool should not be missed. The curved pool beside the restaurant is an exceptionally beautiful place to relax. Since every room is a private pool villa, the main pool never felt crowded, making it easy to enjoy the space at a slower pace.

Looking out over the open pool and endless greenery, I felt as if I had returned to nature in its purest form. There was something almost mystical about floating in the water while surrounded by the forest. It felt as though my mind itself was being restored.

This was the moment I thought, “This is why people come to Ubud”. With rice terraces nearby and the feeling of being completely immersed in the jungle, the atmosphere was difficult to describe in words. Sitting quietly with a Bintang beer or a fresh coconut in hand felt very close to paradise.

A Dreamlike Breakfast at Viceroy Bali Ubud

Blue sky, white clouds, and endless shades of green. In the morning, I took a slow walk toward the breakfast restaurant, though guests can also use a buggy if preferred.

Because this is not a large resort with a high number of guests, breakfast is not served as a buffet. Instead, it is offered à la carte, which suits the quiet, intimate atmosphere of the property very well. You can choose from a variety of starters, mains, desserts, and drinks, and everything is brought directly to the table.

I ordered egg dishes, pastries, fruit juice, and coffee. Once the large table was filled, it certainly did not feel any less generous than a buffet. It was also beautifully presented, making it easy to take photos and enjoy a leisurely breakfast that felt almost like a full brunch experience.

Complimentary Guest Shuttle to Ubud Center

During my stay, the resort offered a complimentary shuttle service to central Ubud. When I used it, the process was quite convenient: I simply requested the car through reception, and they arranged it for me.

There was a set schedule, but in practice, if I informed the staff around 20 to 30 minutes before departure, they were able to prepare the vehicle.

The shuttle operated round-trip, but the drop-off and pick-up points were fixed rather than fully flexible. The two designated points were:

  • Bank BPD by Ubud Palace
  • Coco Supermarket by Monkey Forest

So while it was not a door-to-door service to any location of your choice, it was still a very useful way to travel between the resort and the main Ubud area.

What Felt Less Perfect About This Pool Villa Stay?

In terms of hardware, the villa condition felt close to the very highest level among luxury pool villas I have stayed in. The only aspect that felt somewhat less polished was the software – the service.

Compared with the highly refined, consistently polished hospitality I have experienced at global chain hotels, the service here felt more natural and informal. To put it gently, it had a less structured style. When I arrived for check-in slightly before the official time, I was waiting around in the lobby, but I had the impression that no one was particularly attending to me. Only after I mentioned that I had arrived for check-in was I told that the room was not ready yet and that I should wait.

For that reason, I think it is best to arrive with slightly adjusted expectations regarding service. That said, the atmosphere of the resort was so extraordinary that it was easy to remember the stay for its beauty more than its imperfections.

Final Thoughts on Viceroy Bali Ubud

This is a resort where the hardware, natural setting, privacy, and villa experience feel truly exceptional. The private pool, forested valley view, peaceful breakfast, and quiet sense of escape all made the stay deeply memorable. While the service did not feel as polished as some of the global luxury chain hotels I have stayed in, the overall atmosphere was powerful enough to make the experience feel special.

For travelers looking for a romantic, nature-filled pool villa stay in Ubud – especially those who want privacy, space, and a strong sense of place – Viceroy Bali Ubud is a hotel that leaves a lasting impression.
