I visit Bangkok at least 2 or 3 times a year, sometimes for business and occasionally simply to relax or enjoy the city’s food scene.
For a short trip, choosing an expensive luxury hotel does not feel particularly burdensome. Most of my stays, however, last 2 or 3 weeks – and sometimes as long as a month – so staying exclusively at five-star hotels can quickly become difficult to justify.
Thailand is also no longer quite as inexpensive as it once was. Prices continue to rise year after year, and Bangkok in particular has gradually become a far less affordable destination than many travelers may remember.
For this reason, I am always interested in four-star hotels that are reasonably priced, offer dependable value, and still provide the consistency expected from an international hotel brand.
This is my honest account of DoubleTree by Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok, a property that appeared promising on paper but ultimately left me with rather mixed feelings.
Rooms – Compact, Enclosed, and Difficult to Enjoy
The guest room was small and felt noticeably confined, while the view offered little to enhance the experience. In practical terms, it felt very much like a straightforward business hotel, and it would be wise not to arrive expecting anything beyond that level.
The window design was particularly puzzling. It was positioned and structured in such an awkward way that the room felt far more enclosed than it needed to be. I found the layout so constricting that I did not particularly enjoy spending time in the room.
The entire space felt compact, including the bathroom. There was no bathtub, only a shower enclosure, and the limited proportions made the bathroom feel somewhat cramped as well.
Before arriving, I had noticed that many online reviews were less than enthusiastic. After staying here myself, I began to understand why. There were very few aspects of the room that I could describe as memorable or genuinely appealing, and I left feeling that this would probably not be a hotel I would choose again.
I had also expected more from the Sukhumvit area, particularly because it has become one of Bangkok’s most talked-about neighborhoods. In reality, I found it rather hectic and noticeably expensive.
I did not come across many restaurants or dishes that felt exceptional enough to justify the higher prices. There were, however, plenty of polished, fashionable cafés where a single cup of coffee could cost around $7–$8. As someone who usually drinks two or three coffees a day, that quickly became a surprisingly significant expense.

DoubleTree or Millennium Hilton?
For anyone deciding between DoubleTree by Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok and Millennium Hilton Bangkok, I would recommend paying a little more and choosing Millennium Hilton.
The difference in price may not be dramatic, but the difference in overall quality is substantial. In terms of atmosphere, facilities, sense of space, and the overall hotel experience, the two properties felt remarkably far apart.
Swimming Pool – Small, Enclosed, and Best Paired with Happy Hour
The hotel does have a swimming pool, but it felt quite small and distinctly four-star in character. Had it been positioned above the surrounding buildings, the open skyline might have compensated for its limited size. Instead, the area felt enclosed and somewhat lacking in atmosphere.
Perhaps for that reason, I did not see a single person using the pool during my visit. I also did not feel particularly tempted to swim.
Rather than spending time in the water, I stopped by during happy hour and enjoyed a mojito, a margarita, and a bottle of Chang beer before leaving.
Happy hour is probably the best time to visit the bar, as drinks are often available on a buy-one-get-one-free basis or at a discount of around 50 percent. Arriving at the right time makes the experience considerably more affordable and pleasant.
Breakfast – Surprisingly Excellent and Almost Five-Star in Quality
Although I was disappointed by many aspects of the stay, the breakfast remains a genuinely positive memory.
It was served on the ground floor, opposite the lobby, and the selection was extensive enough that it took quite some time simply to look through everything.
There was a wide range of vegetables, cheeses, breads, and hot dishes, and both the ingredients and preparation were of a notably high standard. I found myself lingering over breakfast far longer than expected.
The eggs Benedict was a particular highlight. A poached egg served over bread toasted in butter immediately made the morning feel more indulgent. Eggs Benedict is not always available at four-star hotels, and its presence reflected the unusually strong quality of the breakfast at DoubleTree by Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok.
Paired with savory bacon, coffee, and a croissant, it was difficult not to feel completely content.
In hindsight, I may also have discovered why I never seem to lose weight while traveling, despite walking extraordinary distances every day. Eating croissants generously spread with butter each morning was never likely to help.
Perhaps it is time for a little restraint. From now on, I should probably begin breakfast with a salad although the warm bowl of rice noodles was also far too satisfying to ignore.
Final Thoughts – Breakfast Was the Clear Highlight
I rarely describe a hotel this negatively, but the overall stay felt underwhelming. Even the bed seemed unusually small.
A King Guest Room would ordinarily be expected to contain a proper king-size bed, yet this one felt closer to a queen. The hotel described it as a king bed, but why it felt so compact remains something of a mystery.
As far as I understand, international mattress dimensions should be relatively consistent. I use a king-size bed at home, so I usually notice the difference immediately – and this bed genuinely felt smaller than expected.
There was also one small incident at check-in that left me slightly disappointed: everyone seemed to receive the signature welcome cookie except me. I eventually asked for one and received it, so it was hardly a serious issue.
Still, hospitality is often shaped by small details. It was not the cookie itself that mattered, but rather the accumulation of little things being overlooked.
This was my first return to Thailand in quite some time. Bangkok still looked familiar in many ways, but the increase in prices was difficult to miss. The era when Southeast Asia automatically felt inexpensive may now belong largely to the past.
For travelers who value an excellent breakfast and can secure an especially competitive rate, DoubleTree by Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok may still be worth considering. For my own travel style, however, the enclosed room, limited pool, compact bed, and generally restrained sense of comfort outweighed the advantages.
The breakfast was excellent. Unfortunately, almost everything else left me wishing for more.
