Phuket is often associated with Patong, Kata, and Karon, but some of the island’s most beautiful stretches of coastline lie beyond these familiar names. North of Patong, Bang Tao Beach offers a different atmosphere, particularly within Laguna Phuket, an established resort community with landscaped grounds and an altogether more leisurely pace.
For those familiar with Bali, Nusa Dua offers a useful point of reference: an elegantly maintained resort enclave where the surroundings encourage you to slow down.
This was the setting for my stay at Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket, a five-star beachfront resort whose appeal became much clearer once I experienced it in person.

Location – A Beautiful Beachfront Setting with Everyday Convenience
For me, a seaside resort is at its most appealing when it sits directly on the beach. Some newer properties offer beautiful rooms and contemporary facilities, yet their locations farther inland mean the sea is something you visit rather than a constant part of your stay.
Opened in 1987, Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket occupies a particularly lovely stretch of Bang Tao Beach. Its long history is an advantage here, both in the beachfront position it secured and in the mature landscaping that has developed around it.
The combination of direct beach access and everyday conveniences within walking distance made this one of the most practical resort locations I have experienced in Laguna.
During my stay, a FamilyMart was approximately a minute away on foot, and a nearby night market opened on weekends. This was more than an isolated convenience store beside a hotel: the surrounding shopping area was lively enough to attract guests arriving by shuttle from other resorts.
Having somewhere close by to pick up water, buy essentials, or enjoy a casual dinner made the stay considerably easier.
The arrival experience was equally appealing. The lobby felt closely connected to the greenery outside, with both open-air spaces and an air-conditioned indoor area. Throughout the grounds, carefully tended gardens offered little scenes that repeatedly tempted me to stop and take photographs.
Before arriving, I had struggled to find reviews that really conveyed the property’s character. In person, I found it considerably prettier than the photographs had suggested.

My Dusit Club Room – Ocean Views and a Terrace Close to the Sand
My accommodation at Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket was a ground-floor Dusit Club Room overlooking the sea.
At 35 square metres, it was not exceptionally large on paper, but the broad panoramic windows made it feel noticeably more spacious. The room had recently been refurbished when I visited, and the interiors felt fresh, polished, and very well presented.
Outside, the terrace had sun loungers, with the beach just a little farther beyond. It was an arrangement that made moving between the room and the shore wonderfully effortless.
Being able to see the sea directly from bed meant the sense of being on a beach holiday never disappeared, even when I stayed indoors.
This is precisely why I value an ocean view so highly. It changes how a room feels throughout the day.
The bathroom had a separate shower enclosure and bathtub, a layout I always appreciate. Evening turndown service brought another discreet refresh, with staff quietly returning the room to order while we were out.
There were also thoughtful practical touches. Housekeeping replenished a generous eight bottles of water each day, while an espresso machine and TWG tea bags made it easy to enjoy a drink without leaving the room.
Individually, these may seem like small details. Over the course of a stay, however, they contribute considerably to the feeling of being well looked after.

Mature Gardens, a Spacious Pool, and Natural Shade by the Sea
One of the resort’s most distinctive features was the presence of both palm trees and towering pine trees beside the beach.
Their size made a real difference. These were mature trees with broad canopies, creating generous pockets of natural shade along the shore. The landscaping had a depth and character that reflected decades of growth.
I have stayed at many hotels, but this was the first where I felt quite such a strong combination of woodland atmosphere and open beachfront scenery. There was something particularly restful about being surrounded by so much greenery while still looking out towards the sea.
The hammocks were another lovely touch – and an almost effortless setting for a memorable holiday photograph.
The swimming area was spacious, with depths ranging from shallow sections suitable for younger children to areas reaching approximately two metres. I particularly enjoyed having enough depth for a proper swim, and I was impressed by how confidently some of the children were swimming in the deeper sections.
Families also had more to explore beyond the water, including a children’s camp, a kids’ play café, and playground facilities.
The expansive grounds and generous pool area made the resort especially appealing for families who wanted space to spend unhurried days together.
There were loungers facing the sea for sunbathing, although the beach itself was not private. Just beyond the resort boundary, local vendors sold food along the beachfront.
I actually found this an advantage. It was possible to enjoy the comfort of the resort and the accessibility of local food in the same setting, without organising a separate trip out whenever we wanted something different to eat.

Club Lounge – Quiet Breakfasts and Afternoon Tea with a View
Staying in a Club room also brought access to breakfast in the lounge, where the atmosphere felt more intimate and peaceful.
This is a sizeable resort with a substantial number of rooms, so having a quieter place to begin the day was a meaningful benefit.
Breakfast combined a buffet selection with freshly prepared egg dishes and noodles brought to the table. Warm dim sum, pastries, fresh juice, TWG tea, and iced Americanos rounded out a generous morning spread.
It was the setting, though, that made these breakfasts particularly enjoyable. Looking towards the sea, with no reason to hurry through the meal, felt like one of the simplest pleasures of a resort holiday.
Afternoon tea was also served from 3 PM to 4 PM during my stay. With pleasant views and a relaxed atmosphere, it provided another welcome opportunity to pause during the afternoon.
For me, the Club experience was as much about having a peaceful setting to linger in as it was about the food and drinks.
I also noticed relatively few Korean guests during my visit. Despite the size of the property, the atmosphere did not feel dominated by busy package-tour groups, which helped preserve the sense of an easygoing retreat.
For anyone planning an independent holiday and hoping to settle into a slower rhythm, this was a particularly appealing part of the experience.

Value – Dining Savings with Free Dusit Gold Membership
One reason I continue to consider the Dusit brand is value. In my experience, its properties can be a little more competitively priced than some other international hotel chains offering a comparable standard of accommodation and facilities.
Rates naturally depend on the season and room category, but the brand is well worth including in a comparison.
Another practical tip is to join Dusit Gold, the hotel group’s free loyalty programme. New members enter at the Silver tier and can receive dining discounts immediately, making membership particularly useful if you expect to eat at the resort regularly.
The applicable dining discounts are:
- 15% off at participating restaurants, with outlet-specific exceptions.
- 10% off at Casuarina Beach Restaurant & Bar, where the same dining discount applies across all membership tiers.
These discounts exclude alcoholic beverages, apply to a maximum of eight diners per group, and cannot be combined with other promotions.
You can still access eligible dining discounts even when your room was booked through a third-party website. If you have already reserved your accommodation elsewhere, it is therefore worth joining before your first hotel meal—or during your stay—and presenting your membership when dining.
For a complimentary membership that takes little effort to arrange, it is a useful way to make dining at the resort a little more affordable.

Final Thoughts – A Resort for Enjoying Phuket at a Slower Pace
I would recommend Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket to travellers who want to step away from the bustle of Patong and spend more of their holiday enjoying the beach, the pool, and the resort itself.
The spacious grounds and swimming area make it a particularly good option for families, while the beachfront setting, mature gardens, and quieter Club lounge also suit those seeking a restful escape.
Nearby shops and the weekend night market add a welcome layer of convenience, especially when you would prefer a simple dinner outside the hotel.
What stayed with me most was how comfortably everything came together: the sea just beyond the terrace, shade beneath the trees, leisurely breakfasts, and enough nearby amenities to keep everyday arrangements easy.
For a Phuket holiday centred on rest, that combination has considerable appeal.
