Hello, I’m SINAE, a travel writer who spends nearly 300 days each year abroad.
Seasoned travelers often understand that a hotel is not simply accommodation – it is an integral part of the journey itself. Even in major cities, a hotel provides essential comfort: a place to recover from the day, to reset, and to prepare for what comes next. But in resort destinations, its role becomes far more significant. The hotel does not merely support the trip—it becomes one of its defining elements.
At first, it is natural to consider more economical options. But then another thought emerges: how many times in life will I truly return here?
Experiences and memories carry a permanence that far outlasts the difference in nightly rates.
When selecting a hotel in Waikiki, several factors deserve careful consideration. First and foremost, proximity to Waikiki Beach is essential. The condition of the rooms is equally important, as many nearby properties reflect their age. For honeymooners, couples, and families alike, choosing the right hotel can shape the overall quality of the experience.
Typical nightly rates are approximately:
- Partial Ocean View: $400
- Diamond Head View: $500
- Oceanfront: $600
Access to the Longboard Club, which includes evening drinks and hors d’oeuvres as well as breakfast for two, is available for an additional $148.

About Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach
The full official name of the property is Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach, part of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts collection.
Preferred Hotels & Resorts represents a global portfolio of more than 650 independent properties. Rather than standardizing design, the brand focuses on preserving each hotel’s individual identity while maintaining consistent global standards of quality and service. The collection spans luxury resorts, boutique hotels, and refined lifestyle properties.
While it may not carry the same brand recognition as some larger chains, the operational consistency and quality assurance are evident.
The professionalism and warmth of the staff during check-in left a particularly positive impression. The interaction felt genuine rather than procedural.
Location & Everyday Convenience
The location is exceptionally well positioned in central Waikiki.
The International Market Place is within comfortable walking distance, and within the hotel itself are both an ABC Store and Kai Coffee. Having immediate access to water, snacks, and quality coffee added a level of daily convenience that became unexpectedly valuable throughout the stay.
This seamless accessibility enhances the overall experience in ways that are subtle yet meaningful.

Cultural Activities, Oceanarium & Beach Candy Rental Benefits
The resort offers a variety of daily guest activities designed to connect visitors with the local environment and culture.
Guests can participate in cultural workshops such as complimentary lei-making sessions. The hotel’s interior oceanarium, an impressive multi-story saltwater aquarium, serves as a visual centerpiece. Scheduled fish feeding sessions take place daily and can be observed without reservation simply by arriving at the designated time.
Passing by the aquarium throughout the day became a quiet but memorable part of the experience.
One of the most practical and valuable guest benefits is access to the Beach Candy rental program, located inside the Twin Fin Hotel, just a few minutes’ walk from Alohilani Resort.
The Beach Candy Waikiki rental desk is situated on the ground floor lobby level of the Twin Fin Hotel. Guests can visit the desk, present their room key, and receive a daily rental credit that can be used toward beach equipment.
Available items typically include beach chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, and other essential beach gear. The rental process is straightforward, and equipment can be borrowed for the day and returned later at your convenience.
This benefit significantly enhances the practicality of spending time at Waikiki Beach. Having proper beach chairs alone transforms the experience, allowing you to relax comfortably for extended periods.
It is especially valuable when visiting destinations such as Hanauma Bay. Renting equipment independently elsewhere can be costly and inconvenient, but having access through Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach removes that burden entirely.
This is not simply a minor perk – it is a genuinely useful benefit that enhances the overall experience and stands out as one of the reasons this property distinguishes itself from others in Waikiki.
For reference, parking is approximately $50 per day, and the daily resort fee is $63.

Diamond Head Ocean View Room – A Landmark Perspective
During my stay, I spent two nights in a Diamond Head Ocean View room.
The view itself was unforgettable. Diamond Head was clearly visible from the room, positioned prominently within the natural landscape. Seeing one of Hawaii’s most iconic landmarks directly from your private space creates an immediate and unmistakable sense of place.
Photographs taken here require no explanation – the setting speaks for itself.
While many Waikiki hotels offer ocean views, relatively few provide such a direct and unobstructed perspective of Diamond Head.
The room interior was clean, modern, and thoughtfully designed. Many neighboring properties retain older interiors, but the recent renovations here were evident in both comfort and aesthetics.
Bathrobes and slippers were provided, and the bathroom amenities carried a subtle pineapple fragrance that reinforced the connection to the destination.
Each day, six coffee capsules were replenished. Reusable tumblers were also provided, allowing guests to refill water freely at purification stations throughout the property – a practical and environmentally thoughtful feature.

Longboard Club – Exceptional Practical Value
Access to the Longboard Club includes both happy hour and breakfast for two.
Given Hawaii’s high dining costs, this addition can represent substantial value.
Happy hour operates daily from 4 PM to 8 PM, offering local draft beers, champagne, and wine. Hot food selections were provided in the evening, including freshly prepared pasta dishes that varied daily.
Coffee is available throughout the day, and guests may enter and use the lounge freely.
Considering that an acai bowl in Waikiki often costs around $20 and a single beer can exceed $10, the overall value becomes immediately apparent.
Breakfast was particularly memorable. The acai bowls were excellent, and fresh local Hawaiian papaya was abundantly available. Unlike imported varieties, Hawaiian papaya is known for its deeper sweetness, softer texture, and distinctly fragrant aroma. It is also surprisingly expensive when purchased at local markets, which made its generous availability here feel especially indulgent.
The outdoor terrace made the experience even more distinctive. A surprisingly large number of small sparrows – often several dozen at a time – would gather nearby, moving confidently between tables and railings. Their constant presence, lively yet gentle, added an unexpected sense of warmth and character to the mornings. Rather than feeling intrusive, it created a scene that felt unmistakably Hawaiian, transforming breakfast into something more memorable than a typical hotel routine.

SWELL Restaurant, Bar & Infinity Pool
The SWELL Restaurant & Bar and infinity pool are located on the fifth floor.
The infinity pool is one of the defining features of Alohilani Resort, offering open views toward the ocean. Compared to many nearby hotels, where pool areas feel secondary, this space feels expansive and intentionally designed.
It delivers the atmosphere expected of a true Hawaiian resort.
However, dining prices at SWELL are notably high. A simple order consisting of one sandwich, one bagel, and two coffees totaled approximately $70 – higher than comparable meals in New York.
This experience reinforced the value of including Longboard Club access, where the overall dining experience offered both better quality and stronger value.

Final Thoughts
The experience at Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach reflects a thoughtful balance between location, comfort, and meaningful guest benefits.
The recently renovated rooms felt fresh and refined. The infinity pool provided a genuine resort atmosphere. Waikiki Beach was just steps away, and surrounding markets, restaurants, and attractions were all easily accessible on foot.
The Beach Candy rental program, along with Longboard Club access, added practical value that significantly enhanced the stay.
Some hotels provide accommodation.
Others provide location.
A select few provide a sense of place.
Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach is unmistakably one of them.
