Hello, I’m SINAE, a travel writer who spends much of the year exploring the world at a slower pace, documenting places through photographs and stories.
During my recent month-long stay in Indonesia, I spent most of my time between Yogyakarta and Surabaya. Since Jakarta is famously associated with heavy traffic, I had little desire to venture deep into the city center unless absolutely necessary.
On my arrival day, I stayed near the airport at a Fairfield property before catching a domestic flight. For my final night in Indonesia, I initially planned to return to the same hotel.
However, I arranged to meet my cousin, who lives locally, and decided instead to spend a night in Serpong, a modern satellite city about thirty minutes away. The plan was simple – share a meal, enjoy a few coffees, and spend some relaxed time together before heading home.
While researching hotels in the area, I came across Jakarta Episode Gading Serpong Hotel. The property was relatively new, attractively priced, and several reviews mentioned that Korean idols had stayed there during concert visits.
That seemed promising enough to earn it a place on my itinerary.
Rates were approximately USD 70 per night, including breakfast for two.
At that price point, I expected a clean and practical four-star hotel. What I found was something considerably more impressive.

A Four-Star Hotel That Feels Surprisingly Premium
One of the first thoughts that crossed my mind was that Jakarta Episode Gading Serpong Hotel simply did not feel like a typical four-star property.
The attention to detail was remarkable. The interiors incorporated thoughtful design elements that are not commonly found in standard chain hotels. There was a clear effort to create visual character rather than relying solely on functionality.
The bathroom tilework was particularly striking, and even small touches – such as the slippers – felt unusually well considered. The elevators operated through a modern digital system, while the lobby carried a bright, polished atmosphere that immediately exceeded my expectations.
Comparisons between countries are never entirely fair, but I genuinely found myself preferring this hotel to certain Singapore properties I have experienced at considerably higher rates. In terms of overall presentation and ambiance, it reminded me somewhat of the well-regarded Hoiana resort complex in Vietnam.
The guest rooms also carried a subtle boutique-hotel personality. There was a sense of individuality that is often missing from larger international chains.
More than once, I found myself wondering: “Can a four-star hotel really look this good?”
The swimming pool does exist, although it feels more like a complementary facility than a major attraction. It is relatively small and unlikely to be the reason anyone books the hotel. That said, I was not visiting Serpong for a resort-style pool experience, so it never felt like a drawback.
The staff were consistently warm and welcoming throughout my stay.
Interestingly, I had paid around USD 80 per night at a nearby Fairfield property without breakfast, yet Episode Gading Serpong Hotel felt noticeably more refined while costing less. The overall value proposition was difficult to ignore.

Breakfast That Exceeded Expectations
Breakfast was another pleasant surprise.
Indonesia is not generally a destination where I expect to encounter a large selection of Indian cuisine. In fact, I often associate that influence more strongly with neighboring Malaysia. Yet Episode Gading Serpong Hotel featured a surprisingly extensive Indian section.
The standout for me was the tandoori chicken, which was genuinely enjoyable. Beyond that, the variety was impressive. There was enough diversity that simply exploring the buffet became part of the experience.
To be honest, before arriving I had assumed that a hotel charging roughly USD 70 per night could only provide a fairly basic breakfast. My expectation was simply to have something convenient before starting the day.
Instead, the spread felt comparable to breakfasts I have encountered at many five-star properties. Not every dish was exceptional, but the overall quality comfortably exceeded what I anticipated for this price category.
It was one of those breakfasts that leaves you thinking, “This is far better than it needs to be.”
An amusing moment occurred during breakfast when a staff member unexpectedly brought me a dragon fruit smoothie and asked if we could take a photograph together. I agreed without much hesitation and later wondered whether it might have been connected to their interest in Korean culture.
After spending so much time at large international hotel brands, experiences like this remind me why independent and lifestyle-oriented hotels can be so memorable. They often possess a personality that is difficult to replicate within a standardized global chain.

Why Serpong Is Worth Considering
For international travelers, Serpong is not typically a destination that appears on the standard Jakarta itinerary. It is better known as a modern suburban district where local residents spend weekends, enjoy staycations, and conduct business.
The commercial infrastructure is highly developed, giving the area a comfortable and contemporary feel. If your schedule in Jakarta allows for a more relaxed pace, Serpong is worth considering.
Although located roughly 28 kilometers from the airport, the road network is relatively efficient, and travel times are often around 40–45 minutes depending on traffic conditions.
Directly across from Jakarta Episode Gading Serpong Hotel sits a large shopping complex where you can observe everyday local life far more naturally than in the city’s tourist-focused areas.
The surrounding neighborhood is also filled with cafés, restaurants, and casual dining venues, making it easy to spend a leisurely afternoon exploring.
Final Thoughts
Among the many hotels I stayed at during my month in Indonesia, Episode Gading Serpong Hotel was one of the most unexpected surprises.
It delivers a level of design, comfort, and overall polish that feels noticeably above its official four-star classification. While the swimming pool is modest, nearly every other aspect of the experience exceeded expectations.
For travelers seeking strong value without sacrificing style, Episode Gading Serpong Hotel offers an experience that feels considerably more expensive than its actual price tag.
And at roughly USD 70 per night with breakfast included, that is not something I say often.
