Hello, I’m SINAE, a travel writer. I usually spend around a month in Bangkok each year, as it is one of the easiest cities in which to combine an extended stay with excellent food, comfortable hotels, and a relatively effortless daily routine.
Whenever possible, I try to stay at a different property on each visit. This time, I chose The Westin Grande Sukhumvit Bangkok, one of the more premium Marriott-affiliated hotels in the city.
An Excellent Location, Just Steps from the BTS
The Westin Grande Sukhumvit Bangkok is located beside Asok BTS Station, with the station entrance almost directly in front of the hotel. For travelers who rely on public transportation, the location is exceptionally convenient.
Although I generally use Grab or other ride-hailing services while traveling in Thailand, Bangkok traffic can become extremely heavy. During the rainy season in particular, the BTS is often the faster and more practical option.
As soon as I entered the hotel, a staff member guided me toward the check-in area, which is located around the sixth or seventh floor.
Among major Southeast Asian cities, Bangkok seems to have one of the largest and most visible Japanese communities. This is especially noticeable in the Sukhumvit area, where many Japanese companies operate and a considerable number of Japanese residents live.
The front desk agent who assisted me was also Japanese. I had stayed at several hotels in Bangkok before, but this was the first time I had encountered a Japanese staff member at reception.

Guest Rooms – Dated in Style, but Generally Well Maintained
During check-in, the staff carefully explained the benefits associated with my membership status and assigned me a room on the 21st floor.
When I previously traveled through Türkiye, I received several suite upgrades as a Marriott Titanium Elite member. By comparison, during approximately three months of hotel stays in Bangkok, I did not receive a suite upgrade even once, which was slightly disappointing.
This is understandable to some extent. Bangkok attracts many long-stay business travelers, and some guests reserve suites directly. There are also a considerable number of Ambassador Elite members staying at Marriott properties in the city, so complimentary suite upgrades can be difficult to secure.
Upon entering the room, I immediately noticed that the overall design felt somewhat dated. The carpeted floor, slightly old-fashioned sofa, and classic wooden furniture created a traditional atmosphere rather than a modern or polished one.
To be entirely honest, the room did not feel particularly contemporary or sophisticated, and this was one of the more disappointing aspects of the stay.
Although I had been assigned a high-floor room on the 21st floor, the building directly opposite was so tall that it blocked much of the view. At times, it was difficult to feel that I was staying on a high floor at all.
The windows also appeared not to have been cleaned recently. The visible marks and hazy glass made the room feel less open and slightly more confined than it should have.
Room rates here are relatively high compared with several nearby hotels, yet the overall room quality did not feel equally competitive. For that reason, it would not be my first choice for an extended stay.
The bathroom, however, had been renovated in brighter tones and felt clean and fresh. Unfortunately, the shower was not working properly, and a staff member had to visit the room to repair it.
I did wonder whether the shower had been tested during housekeeping. Still, the issue was resolved promptly, even though it was close to midnight, and I appreciated the quick response.
A Nespresso machine was provided in the room, and this remains the only Bangkok hotel from that particular trip that I clearly remember offering one. Several other properties instead provided Japanese-style capsule coffee machines.
The bedding featured Westin’s familiar Heavenly Bed, while the bathroom amenities were also from the Heavenly line. These familiar brand standards added a reassuring sense of comfort.
Outdoor Pool, Excellent Club Lounge, and Generous Breakfast
Despite the hotel being busy, the outdoor pool was completely empty during my visit. Most guests appeared to be traveling for business, so I effectively had the entire pool to myself.
Although Thailand is in Southeast Asia, swimming can feel surprisingly cool during the winter months. Outdoor pools are generally not heated, and from November through February, the water may be too cold for some guests.
By April and May, when Bangkok’s intense heat arrives, the pool would likely feel far more inviting.
The pool itself is not especially large, and because it is not positioned on one of the hotel’s highest floors, the view is fairly ordinary. Guests choosing a hotel primarily for the swimming pool may find it somewhat underwhelming.
The club lounge cocktail hour begins at 6:00 PM, with a varied selection of food, wine, and beer.
I arrived expecting a respectable but fairly standard evening spread. Instead, it exceeded my expectations by a considerable margin.
Among approximately 20 hotel lounges I had experienced at the time, this was arguably the most impressive happy-hour offering. Beer selections included Chang and Heineken, while the main dishes featured pork ribs, marinated chicken, and samosas.
The food was genuinely delicious and presented at a level that felt closer to a proper restaurant dinner than a typical lounge snack service. It turned into a far more enjoyable evening than I had anticipated.
Breakfast was equally generous, with a broad variety of dishes. Perhaps reflecting the hotel’s substantial Japanese clientele, the buffet also included a particularly good selection of sushi and rolls.
For me, the outstanding lounge and breakfast experience was the strongest reason to consider returning to The Westin Grande Sukhumvit Bangkok.
Final Thoughts
The room rates are relatively high compared with other five-star hotels in Bangkok, while the condition and design of the guest rooms fell short of what I expected at this price point. In that respect, the hotel occupies a somewhat uncertain position.
However, the quality of the food and beverage offerings during happy hour was significantly better than anticipated and strong enough to make me consider another stay.
Travelers who value a convenient BTS location, a substantial breakfast, and an excellent club lounge may find that these advantages outweigh the less contemporary room design.
With those points in mind, I hope you enjoy a comfortable and memorable stay at The Westin Grande Sukhumvit Bangkok.
