Hello, I’m SINAE, a travel writer who spends much of the year exploring the world through hotels, photography, and long-form travel stories.
As someone who visits Bali almost every year, I often find myself looking at the map of Indonesia and wondering where else I should explore beyond the places I already know well. Among the destinations that caught my attention, Surabaya eventually became my choice.
Indonesia lies along the Ring of Fire, a region shaped by volcanic landscapes, and Surabaya is especially known as a gateway to Mount Bromo. This dramatic volcanic area is one of Indonesia’s most iconic natural sights, and one of the advantages of staying in Surabaya is that a one-day Bromo tour can be arranged from the city.
After spending 14 nights and 15 days in Yogyakarta, I traveled to Surabaya by train. I stayed at JW Marriott Surabaya for around ten days, using the hotel as a comfortable base to experience the local surroundings, visit Mount Bromo, and enjoy a slower hotel stay.

Possibly One of the Most Affordable JW Marriott Properties in the World
JW Marriott Hotel Surabaya may be one of the most reasonably priced JW Marriott properties in the world. During my stay, rates were around USD 110 per night, which felt almost surprising for a hotel under the JW Marriott brand.
The property does have a classic character, as the building is not brand-new. However, it has been well maintained, and the rooms appear to have gone through renovation, giving them a cleaner and more refreshed feel.
The lobby has an antique, elegant atmosphere, with a sense of old-world grandeur. The service was also consistently warm and polished. I usually read reviews carefully before booking a hotel, but JW Marriott is one of those brands where I rarely feel uncertain. Across different countries, the brand tends to maintain a reliable luxury standard.

Titanium Elite Corner Room Upgrade
As a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite member, I was upgraded to a corner room.
The view over the city of Surabaya from the room was genuinely beautiful, and the room itself was very spacious. A lower room rate does not mean the JW Marriott experience feels reduced. The bedding, robes, and Aromatherapy Associates amenities all reflected the same global standard I have come to expect from the brand.
If you have time, this is the kind of hotel where a longer stay makes sense. The value becomes even stronger when you are able to slow down and truly enjoy the room, the lounge, and the hotel facilities.

Outdoor Pool with a Resort-Like Feel
The hotel also has an outdoor swimming pool, and I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious it felt.
Although this is a city hotel, the pool area adds a subtle resort-like atmosphere, making it possible to enjoy a quiet moment of relaxation in the middle of Surabaya.
There were many guests staying at the hotel, but interestingly, not many people were actually using the pool. This made the space feel calmer and more comfortable than I had expected.

Breakfast That Far Exceeded My Expectations
To be honest, because the rate was around USD 110 per night, I did not expect too much. Usually, the overall experience tends to reflect the price.
But breakfast here was far beyond what I anticipated.
The breakfast restaurant itself was exceptionally beautiful. It had an almost palace-like atmosphere, and I would say it was one of the most memorable breakfast venues I have experienced. The space felt bright, elegant, and refined, with a greenhouse-style ceiling that added a lovely sense of openness.
The selection was also impressive. The French toast was excellent, there was house-made kombucha, and even a variety of sushi. I also noticed quite a few Japanese guests during my stay, which may explain why the breakfast selection felt thoughtfully balanced for international travelers.

Happy Hour and Afternoon Tea That Felt Like a Full Dining Experience
The evening happy hour was generous enough to feel like a proper meal. The hot dishes changed daily, and the quality of the bakery items was particularly impressive — to the point where I could imagine them being served at a JW Marriott property in Korea.
There is a baking company on the ground floor, and the hotel seems to put real care into its pastries and desserts. The ingredients felt generous, and the quality was far beyond what I expected at this price point. The cheesecake, in particular, was excellent — rich enough to remind me of cheesecake I had in New York.
Afternoon tea was served from 2 PM to 4 PM. It was not as elaborate as the evening spread, but there were several pastries and sweets, along with coffee and tea available throughout the day.
Because coffee and tea could be enjoyed freely, I rarely felt the need to go outside just for a café. For a relaxed hotel stay, this property was genuinely ideal. The only challenge is that getting to Surabaya itself may not be the easiest journey. In my case, I traveled from Jakarta to Yogyakarta first, then continued to Surabaya by train.

Final Thoughts
JW Marriott Surabaya is a hotel worth staying at for more than just one or two nights, especially if you have the opportunity to enjoy it at a slower pace.
For travelers interested in visiting Mount Bromo, Surabaya works well as a practical base. You can combine a volcanic landscape tour with a comfortable city hotel stay, which makes the experience feel more balanced.
Considering the room quality, elite benefits, breakfast, lounge offerings, and overall service, JW Marriott Surabaya offered far more value than I expected. It is classic rather than ultra-modern, but the experience felt polished, generous, and genuinely memorable.
For me, this hotel was not simply a convenient place to stay before or after a Bromo tour. It was a property that made Surabaya feel like a destination in itself.
